The Ogden Standard-Examiner (Ogden, Utah) · 18 Aug 1940, Sun · Page 18
LEGION GROUP ENTERTAINED DURING WEEK Patriotism was stirred anew in the hearts of nearly 600 Legionnaires and auxiliary members, as they met in session at Ogden for the twenty-second annual convention of the American Legion, department of Utah, on Thursday, Friday and Saturday of last week. It was a happy, but slightly fatigued group of members who departed for their various homes after the last bit of business and fun had been completed Saturday night.
Important on Thursday's program for the entertainment of the auxiliary members was the card party held at the Utah Power & Light auditorium.
Highlighting the entertainment for the femme members on Friday was the Gold Star mother's tea, given at the home of Mrs. Ronald Wadsworth, 2780 Madison between the hours of four and six p.m. An Italian cut-work cloth covered the table which was centered with salmon-colored gladioli combined with small blue bachelor buttons. Those who assisted in the entertainment of the guests were the past presidents of the organization. About 250 called.
A very interesting item on the day's program was the memorial held at the Orpheum theater at eleven o'clock. H. Elwyn Davis, national Legion vice commander, of Pueblo, Colo., was the main speaker. Musical selections were given by the Morgan high school band, Geoerge Manning, and Donn Woodyatt. A pageant play, "Peace At Any Cost," written and directed by Daisy Crouch of Morgan, was presented.
In the evening the annual banquet of the American Legion auxiliary, department of Utah, was given at Hotel Ben Lomond. The red, white and blue color scheme was carried out in the decorative idea, and covers were laid for about 300 guests. In charge of the event were Mrs. L. Wesley Robbins and Mrs. David Scott. The following program was presented: A musical trio composed of Mrs. Russell B. Petty, Mrs. Jesse Hestmark and Mrs. R. L. Draper; vocal selections George Manning, Don Woodyatt and Don Bjorkland; introduction of speakers, L. Wesley Robbins, toastmaster, Arthur Woolley; greetings, Mayor Fred M. Abbott, talks, deparment commander, Glen Ballinger and department president, Mrs. L. E. Nelson, Ora Bundy and Vice-Commander Davis.
All the past deparment commanders of the Legion and department presidents of the auxiliaries were named by Mr. Woolley and those present responded.
General chairman of the auxiliary events was Mrs. Ora Bundy, who was assisted by Mrs. R. L. Harlin, Mrs. Harold Bramwell and Mrs. Joseph P. Gavin on the general arrangements committee.
Other committee members were: Mrs. Wilford Smeding, reservations; Mrs. Arthur Woolley, memorial; Mrs. L. J. Paine and Mrs. J.A. Howell, past presidents' breakfast; Mrs. David Scott and Mrs. L. Welsey Robbins, state dinner; Mrs. John C. Brown, unit page; Mrs. R.D. Rockwell, Forty and Eight; Mrs. Willford Gwilliam and Mrs. Grant A. Rounds, American Legion parade; Mrs. Ray Minter, assembly; Mrs. Marvel Reeve, open house and cocktail party; Mrs. Ernest Balch, concessions; Mrs. Ben Garr, housing; Mrs. William J. Manning, Mrs. George H. Holt, dances; Mrs. Ronald Wadsworth, Gold Star mothers tea; Mrs. Merle L. Fenstermaker, unit president for coming year, distinguished guests: Mrs. L. D. Turner, one-act play, "In Memoriam."
