"I took my first job with the Salt Lake Telegram and delivered papers after school."
"At Central Junior High, I went out for football but gave it up for my paper route. It cost me too much money to hire a substitute. I covered half of Ogden with the Salt Lake Telegram (an evening paper). I had the south side of 25th Street which was notorious for its prostitutes. They treated me exceptionaly well and I never had troubles collecting from them or the bars; I got real good bonuses on special occasions and Christmas. I also had a lot of blacks on my route and really enjoyed them. They paid better and had much lower incomes than many whites who gave me a hard time."
"I acquired a paper route in Junior High and kept it until the end of my Junior year of High School."
Approximately 1939, 14 years old.
"I switched to the Salt Lake Tribune which was a morning route and continued this until my junior year at High School."
"In High School, I was average (C average). I switched to delivering the Salt Lake Tribune (a morning paper as it is now) and had the best route in the city - the one with all the apartment houses between the office and my home. I traveled less than any other route."

"Office work was okay but being a very undisciplined person, I craved more freedom and jumped right out of there when offered a selling territory with Hood Rubber Company, a division of B.F. Goodrich. Our office was in San Francisco with the home office in Watertown, Massachusetts. We had three sales meetings each year. Two on the west coast and one in Chicago or east coast so Jalaine and I had at least three vacations paid for each year."
"When I first started with Hood Rubber Company, Jalaine was pregnant with Scott and had a hard time traveling by air. She joined me in San Francisco at the end of training and the company started us off by sending us off on a two week vacation up the coast into Canada and home."
"We did really well with Hood Rubber and the third year I won the National Sales Contest for the west coast. After five and a half years I went for the big dollars in Insurance. It was hard giving up all those long vacations."
"I accepted a job with Hood Rubber Co. A friend had told the District Manager of Hood Rubber Co. about me and arranged an interview. I decided to take the territory of Utah, Southern Idaho. In my fourth year with the Company, I won a National Sales Contest and was sent back east to tour the factory, etc. I worked with this company from September 1952 to April 1958. I enjoyed the work, the company and my boss."

Twelve years later after telling me what a great retirement program they had year after year, they flew in on a Monday and picked up the company car, paid me $1600 and folded. Again I had been one of the top salespeople on the west coast but boom and that was that."
