Overview

Notes from Jalaine's daughter: These letters were stored in a box Jalaine had in her basement. There were certainly other cards and letters that never made it to this box but these letters were obviously something she considered special enough to save - most are from her younger life. These letters showed me elements from her past that she never disclosed.

Dear Jalaine, Well here comes that letter I promised you so soon. I miss school already. I can't imagine what I will be like in a couple of weeks. I sure am going to miss all of you swell new friends I have made this year. Connie is feeling pretty blue because Billy is going to the army it is a good thing she doesn't know him, or it is hard to tell how she would feel. I am just wondering what is going to happen to all of us kids who are carrying torches for some one we didn't even know. I haven't seen your part of us since Friday night at the dance but I guess he is just taking it easy for a while. I thought that when school let out that my torch would go out but so far it hasn't. I keep thinking how perfect he looked Friday night and I can't even get him off of my mind. This is the most silly thing that has ever happened to me. Other kids I have liked I have known them and most of the time been with them and most of the time been with them, but not this time. It is some consolation to know that he at least knows I exist. This coming Friday (Friday 4) we are having that little spree (party). I am asking you and Betty to come and stay with me. I hope you can come. If you can come try and come Fri. around noon, and maby we can go swiming anad then come home and go to the park. Then you could go home sometime Saturday. Well I guess I had better stop for tonight. Love, Ann Mae
P.S. Send me a card if you can't come. And be good to Seth. Love Ann Mae
P.S. No 2. I sure have got a lot of love haven't I. A.C.

Dearest Jalaine, I am in one of my sentinmental moods tonight so I thought I would write you even though I did spend all day with you. I wish you would come down and visit me some day. If you ever are down here on a party and don't come and see me I will be good and mad. If you come with Pim he could sit out in the car or go see Doc while you come visit me. My visit in Richmond today sure did cook me (about Pim). If he wasn't so cock-eyed cute. I would have died if he had of came over to your place while I was there. I suspose when I marry my W.P.A. husband and we see if Mr. Stoddard will sell us my dream house up there by you, I will still be wondering about Pim (I got it bad and that ain't good) . But I will probley wonder until the day I die. I'll bet he sure does think I am a xxxxx (can't blame him). Please don't leave this laying around. If someone should read it I'd die (again). Love, Ann Mae
P.S. This is how seeing him affects me (you know sentimental) A. C.

Dear Jalaine, We are in seminary and as usual I cannot work. So I thought I would write a small note to you, as it looks as if I am never going to get one from you. I guess we are learning how to fly, hope we like it. Didn't us look cute when we were home. I don't think I ever will quite get all over that (you know what). Well I guess I better close. If you have some spare time you could write to me, or even say hello. Love, Ann Mae

Dear Jalaine, Guess you know by now what I'm writing you about at least I spoke of it to your mother. She said you wanted to find a job here in Salt Lake and a place to stay. Wish I could have know and we could have talked it over when I was home. Anyway it's like this - I live upon Seventh Avenue with Miss Schick. She's a good Mormon and wants good girls. She works at a bakery so we don't see her very much. It's almost like being by ourselves. She has a nurse and a teacher also rooming here. My roommate went to Montana so I'm looking for some nice girl to liver with. Your the type girl I want and seeming we're both from Richmond it should be fun. We could go home together sometimes. About the place now - we use her kitchen to cook and she's not here to looking into everything we do so it's really nice. I have twin beds in the room. Plenty of closet space and drawers. And it's close to the bathroom. Miss Schick does my washing and I use her iron. Gee that's real good for just $20.00 a month here in Salt Lake. Wish you would think it over and come and try it anyway. You could find another place to live if this one should be too far from your work. But it's really in a nice place in town. Hope you decide to come I'd surely like to have you. Let me know sometime soon for sure. I'd lots rather have you than some strange girl. By for now, Bar Dee

Dear Jalaine, Got your letter and I'm surely glad you have decided to come. I told Miss Schick for sure of your plans so the place is all set for you unless you change your mind. We hope you don't. Do you know Shirll Corbet from Smithfield? She and her girlfriend have an appartment together and they want to find a place for four of us if we care to live with them. Of course we'll talk about that when you come down. It would cost us more to live with Shirll so maybe it's best here. Jalaine, my folkes are coming down about the first of October so if you have some thing they could bring I'm sure they wouldn't mind. I'm not sure who is all coming with them. You can let me know for sure how your coming and I can be here to meet you. Our telephone number is 3-0378. I saw President Truman in the parade yesterday, quite a thrill. Hope to see you soon probably in a week. By now, Bar Dee

7/14/52 - Write Mom and tell her everything is fine.

Dearest Honey Bun

I am here; I arrived at 9 P.M. I have had a bath and a hamburger and am now ready for bed. I had a wonderful trip down. I took it easy and made several stops. From Reno on in, it was very fascinating that is, until I hit Frisco. When I found myself in the middle of this large and what appears to be a God forsaken place, I felt homesick for you and S.L.C. I'd like to add please come quick and hug me but I'm afraid you would come and we have got to wait for our vacation. 000XXXX Love, Hubby

Darling

I'm in a somewhat sentimental mood. I had a fair day. This means nothing special. Jack gave me a nice greeting and I sort of got acquainted with the office force. There is another trainee here and I will get to do some training with him. This will relieve the monotony. The last word used was a poor word as I've decided tat despite being homesick for you I'm going to enjoy my training and look forward to our vacation together. I went to the top of the Mark today after work with Jimmy Keegan the other trainee who is on the long range program. The fog was coming in so we could see but half of Frisco. Jimmy is single and new here so I will have company if I desire it. I have decided that as long as I'm here I might as well see Frisco - as mope around wishing you were here with me. What I mean is that I wish ou were here and don't know what to do with myself. I'm really lost without you and need a reassuring hug. Well starting tomorrow I'm off to see the sights. As for today, I've had an Italian supper, been to the top of the Marks and just got out of a show.

I've decided that this is to be an educated tour of Frisco and I don't want to miss this opportunity. I still feel strange and muddled and lost when in a crowd or with Jimmy or Jack. Nights are sure empty without you darling. I have decided that our honeymoon was not complete and am eagerly awaiting Aug 6 to take up where we left off. The convention is to be held Tues and Wed August 5 and 6th. We will be thru about 4:00 8/6. You can plan to come down Wed. afternoon or evening or Thursday morning whichever is best suited to your vacation. This may help as you will only have to get your vacation moved back till Thursday. If you have to take it a week early I will make arrangements to checkout and we will go to "Carmel" and stay over night or you can stay at the Drake with me. If possible, come Wed morning as planned so I can pick you up before the meeting.

Love and XXXXOOXXOOXX Bud

Dearest

What an easy and changed life I'm living. I have convinced myself completely that I never want to go back to being a bachelor. I really have missed you, in spite of the fact you and I have been well occupied. I miss you the minute I get off work and oh how I miss you at night and even in the morning.

How are you making out? It's too late for you to turn back - so you had better miss me just a little. What arrangements did you finally make with the doctor? Be sure to keep me informed as to the day you are to see him as to how you are and how you are getting along day by day.

Wednesday I went out to Harding Park and hit some golf balls and had a very enjoyable time. Last night I went to Lincoln Park and played 16 holes of golf. Jimmie walked around with me and we had a very enjoyable round. The course is laid out partly along the ocean just about at Seal Rock and is very scenic but very easy and short. After the game we ventured to the Cliff House but were too late to get a dinner. We ended the day with a $.60 Super Deluxe Hamburger and piece of apple pie for supper. I have been very conservative so as to keep expenses down and provide for our trip. This evening Jimmie and I went over to Berkeley to see the U of California. We enjoyed a very scenic and beautiful floraled and landscaped campus and had a delightful and delicious supper at "Harvey Blake's". I had a taste char-broiled chicken dinner and splurged $1.95. I figured it was worth forgoing a lunch. Tomorrow I'm going to sleep late and dream of you my darling and then get up with a clear conscience and play 18 holes of golf at Sharp Park.

I have a hard time staying awake on the job as it is such an easy life. So far I have but sat around and discussed the various footwear and had a brief discussion on policy and listened to the tales of another salesman wo just got back from a trip he won to the factory. He is a very nice fellow and very interesting. My future work shouldn't vary much but I believe will increase my enjoyment of it as I learn to talk the footwear line.

p.s. I need a few hugs and all my kisses air mail to tide me over to your arrival.

Love Hubby

Letter 7/20/1952

Darling

Yesterday Jimmie and I went down to the beach to Sharp Park. Sharp Park is of course noted for its golf course. Jimmie is living in the vicinity of Golden Gate Park so we took the long way around and went thru the park and down to the beach. We were so struck by those beautiful ocean breakers that had the weather been 20 degrees cooler we would have ventured in the surf. The high temperature for the day usually runs around sixty five degrees Fahrenheit. The sun usually comes thru the clouds about ten o'clock and the fog moves in from the five to seven o'clock in the evening. I haven't worn and overcoat since my arrival but have found my suede jacket ideal in the evenings. You had better bring a slip on or button sweater and your pink shorty coat.

Well in getting back to the golf we had a very good time. It was a well laid out course and I sure had trouble for the first nine holes. We had two ladies playing with us and I was jinks. After they left I really settled down for the last nine and Jim and I have a very enjoyable day. We both got burnt and Jimmie had to stay in today because of a blistered nose and forehead.

Today I slept in late and thought of how nice it would be if you were by my side. I didn't get breakfast until 11:00 A.M. and after I decided to seek out the only par 6 golf hole. I found it at Lake Chabot Golf Course. To get there I had to cross the bay and go thru Oakland. I found the course up in the hills. I also found three very nice fellows to play with. I really enjoyed the course but feel as through I have been on a mountain climbing expedition. Alone I could never have played this course as in most instances one could not see the greens from the tees. On one tee the green was one hundred yards below and it was so steep that there were steps to walk down. On another hole you would shoot over a valley and they didn't even other to put grass in between. In fact, several holes were partially this way. Two of the fellows gave out after 11 holes and the remaining one had to leave on the fifteenth for work. I met two others and played in with them. The courses here are very scenic and I know you will enjoy Pebble Beach as I have heard a lot about it.

For the weekend I have gotten by on two meals a day because of my late sleeping and am still ahead of my expenses - even when considering the golf. I hope that you have to start your vacation on Saturday the 2nd of August as the convention does not start until 5 Aug. Being a young husband madly in love with his young and charming wife I can not stand the strain of being without her any longer than necessary. I believe you should come down Saturday Aug 2 and we could stay here at the hotel Saturday night. Sunday we could drive to Carmel and sight see and stay there Sunday night. Monday we could see the golf course and return to the St. Francis Drake. The convention is to be a short one as they are having another one in September. you will only have Tuesday alone as we will adjourn early Wednesday. By coming down early we will save some money as I will still be on the companies expenses which means I can put all my meals and our hotel bill on my expenses. I believe this is ideal and will give us two days in Carmel and a chance to enjoy Frisco. If you would like we can travel up the beach to another quaint resort on Wednesday and spend the night there. If it is at all possible lets do it this way. You can catch a plane Saturday at five o'clock I believe and be here by eight fifteen. The flight schedule is based on standard time and according to it, the trip would only take one hour and fifteen minutes because you would pick up an hour. Due to the fact Frisco is on Daylight Saving time, the time here is that same as it is there.

I'm real eager so write and tell me if this sounds ok. Did you change your appointment with the doctor? And darling take good care of yourself and be sure to eat even though I'm not there. (Write c/o the hotel). Love and XXOOXXOOOO Bud

Darling

I don't know when I've been more inspired by a letter. Yours was straight from heaven. It pulled me over the hump. In talking about being lonely I've had it. Yesterday after playing a round of golf with Jimmie, I told him that I didn't see how he could stand being single. Of course his answer was that he was a self improvised bachelor and could not imagine being anything else - as he had no experience in the other field. I'm sure happy to find that you likened to me, have found a new way of life which I feel is a way of no return and Baby Doll will be to see you Saturday evening Aug 2. I know I have given you a rough time but I beg of you please start your vacation Saturday Aug 2 and fly down that evening. Check and get your flying reservations Monday or Tuesday for sure. Jack Reed has already made our reservations at the Sir Francis Drake for Monday night and I am going to make reservations Saturday for Monterey as I can make them here in town. I will also make arrangements for you to stay here Saturday night. We can have a wonderful time in Monterey as we will be there Sunday and Monday which I am taking off. Also I will be on company expenses. I know its asking a lot but I'm eager to see my "new" bride and start on our second honeymoon. I said "new" as I would imaging that you have changed since the last time I saw you - probably been something added.

When are you to see the doctor? Make sure everything is ok and write me not later than Tuesday (mail it Tuesday as early as possible so I will get it for sure Friday). Tell me when you will get here and all information. I want to be sure to be waiting at the airport and it is about eleven miles out of town. To make sure everything is ok be sure to wire me at the hotel Saturday Aug 2. Do it about two hours before you are scheduled to leave. You could phone Western Union from home and have it put on our bill. Get Phil to help you take your things to the airport. If for any reason Phil isn't there be sure to take a cab home from work - if you work Saturday - and have a cab take you to the airport and important be sure to have the cab driver carry all suitcases etc. down the steps and wherever you go. Please take it real easy and don't take any chances. I love you darling and I'm real eager to see YOU but take it real easy and be careful. P.S. I liked the long letter especially the condensed part and don't know how I could be without you. Love Bud

Letter 7/29/1952

Monday, Hi Honey Bun

I'm really flying high tonight because I heard from you. I've never been quite so eager for a letter; in fact I usually run all the way up the stairs thew everything I have with me on the bed and settle right down to my letter business. Darling I need you and love your more by the second. Today's card and note came as a complete surprise and just bowled me over.

The weather here has been a little clearer in the morning but the fog still comes in about six o'clock. During the day it is just right and will be extra enjoyable to you because of the heat you are going thru and extra extra enjoyable to me because I'll be able to hold you close - (if I can reach you) and squeeze you for sure - (but not to hard). But honey I love you no matter how you are and would rather have you pregnant and love you that much more for being so.

Sunday I sent over to Vallejo to see my aunt. Mother wrote me that they lived there and on her request I ventured out and have a very enjoyable afternoon. I left early and circled the bay to find a little scenic golf course and Mill Junction. I thoroughly enjoyed the golf and this small - that is - so I thought to be small because I could not see the houses for the pine trees, town of 10,000 population. The town is nestled on the other side of low mountains which keep all the fog and is a scenic Shangri-la.

Gee I forgot all about Pioneer Day's and the holiday. I hope you took advantage of it and got plenty of sleep and did not try to catch up on all the work in one day. On Saturday and Sunday I usually sleep late to give the fog a chance to clear. I really sleep late so I will have plenty to do and thus won't get home sick for you. I sure hope you're not like that gal at the bank who love her husband only when is away - as I woke this morning with a feeling that this week just couldn't go by fast enough. I can now see an outline of what this job consists of. It is no pushover and I'm really going to be busy this week finding things out. The more I learn the more I wonder and I can see now that it will be a lot easier to find out the know how here, than by doing so by correspondence. The first week ere went slow because of missing you and because I did not know what to do with my time but this last week appears to lack days and hours when I'm on the job and have nights that won't let tomorrow come when thinking of you and Saturday.

I hope you get reservations Saturday on the 5:00 P.M. but make sure that you get them for Sunday on the 6:00 A.M. I'd rather have you here Saturday night as I am eager to get back in harness that care free life is for the birds. All my lover and XXOOOOXXO Bud

12/12/54 - Darling and Scottie

Saturday night was the loudest night of the week until Sunday night arrived. You know I'm getting a real teaste of what I give you when I leave you home alone. The convention was a good hot one and I enjoyed it and found that I have done a job this year even though it could have been better. I believe and I can say that the company believes I have done ok. I would have liked to have done better of course and we will see to it that I do better from now on.

If you were here we would have a wonderful time. In Chicago I shopped Marshall Fields. In Detroit I shopped "Hudson's" Oh! What wonderful stores. I keep thinking of what a wonderful time you could have had. I just don't enjoy shopping alone so I decided not to buy a thing until I get home as you enjoy it so much, I thought it best to let you be in on it.

The convention let out 2:00 P.M. Friday so I was M.F and a show and took the 10:45 bus and got in Detroit about 7:30 A.M., had breakfast and went to bed. Since then I have been thru Hudson's seen the town, two shows and the Detroit Lions game on T.V. i just met Walter Hackett, a very nice gentleman and we took time off for a conversation. It's now 10:40 P.M. I feel I may be in the mood for some sleep.

Tomorrow I'm headed for the Dodge plant. I'll go thru the plant in the morning and hope to pick up the car sometime in the afternoon. I'll know in the morning if this will be possible. Otherwise I'll have to wait until Tuesday.

I will write you a card tomorrow air mail but don't expect me until Saturday. I may make it Thursday night or Friday. I'm sure eager - feel like a lost man - I guess I've been happily married too long. Yes I'll take it real easy. Love Bud

4/10/54 - Darling

I have planned a short stopover at Richmond several times but decided to do it your way and see you Thursday or Friday next. Wish you were with me on my trip as business was slow going south and had you been there we could have had a second honeymoon in Las Vegas. The weather was so warm and with spring lilacs in the air I was vacation minded. I am still vacation minded and have been dreaming and planning great adventures for just you and I. My altruism disappears when I'm away from you and I am a selfish and devote' loner and thinker of only you. I only wish we could commence again with a short vacation so as to enjoy all this wonderful spring. It's that season you know when fancies turn to that one and only indescribable you. Love Bud.

Letter 11/15/1955

Nov 14, 1955 - Dear Jalaine,

Your telephone call caught me off guard. I love you very much and did not wan to upset you about my suitcase. I know that I gave you some trouble on the telephone but I didn't mean to. I really know that you did the right thing in sending my bag to Tremonton. Normally I would have been there about two hours at least. As it was Mr. Cowley had gone to Salt Lake City. I was only there about three minutes.

I am sure that Cowley's will hold my bag for me so don't worry about it. I may be in to see you before you get this letter as I may come down from Pocatello Tuesday or Wednesday. All will deend on how things go. We can pick up the bag on the way home. If however you can have the Sego milk man pick it up, that is without inconveniencing him, that would be fine. It really doesn't make any difference as it will be a nice ride for us Saturday and maybe I can work the account while there.

When I look back on the situation I can see that I have an on the ball wife. I forgot to get a razor tonight and will have to wait for the drug stores to open in the morning. I did get anti-freeze for the car as I have been in a blizzard most of the day. There were cars off the road between Richmond and Logan. There was a five car wreck outside of Malta and three other cars off the road between Malta and Burley. It has snowed a little tonight but is too cold and windy to snow hard.

I have Ditter to call on in the morning and will then proceed to Buhl, Hagerman and Mt Home, then back to Shoshone, Hailey and Sun Valley. If by chance I get to Pocatello I may drive to Richmond. With the roads bad however I believe that I best take it easy and spend the night at Sun Valley Wednesday. I should be able to get to Blackfoot if I don't have to set the line up in Pocatello for Blocks. In fact, I may get to Idaho Falls. Thursday I will get back to Pocatello and may stay there so I can work Bancroft, Grace and Soda Springs. I should be home for sure Friday night but don't worry if I don't as I may hit something big such as Blocks and have to service about three stores.

I believe I can buy a pair of socks and a razor tomorrow and get by fine. I can wash my garments and socks and put them on a radiator to dry. I had two clean shirts in the car and my suit so I am really not too bad off.

It feels great to have some real winter weather again. I only hope I don't get stranded in it like some of the people I saw today. Well, I will take it real easy so we can go on our trip. Don't let this weather scare you out and don't let it scare your mother out. I believe I can take anything after today. It was just about as bad coming to Burley as it was going over the point of the mountain the day we turned back. I took it easy and couldn't have gone back after the suit case for anything. I really don't mind the driving but it's such a slow process.

I sure write long letters, don't I. I'm really taking advantage of you to relax. I enjoy talking to you by letter as I can say all I want. I wish I could express the agony I go through at times trying to tell you how much you mean to me. I have had the telephone conversation bothering me and am glad I can tell you what the circumstances were.

I have been trying to think of some way to tell you how much I regret being away again on our anniversary. It seems to take on more meaning each year. I really miss being away from you this year especially as we have built our marriage up to such a wonderful relationship. I know we can improve however (especially me). I hope we can give each other the coming trip to Chicago for our anniversary rememberence. I also want to give you all my love for the coming year. P.S. and a XO till I get home. Bud

Hi Scott - Dad has been thinking of his big boy today. I believe we had better ask Santa Clause for a pair of skis so you stay on top of the snow. Now don't you hit poor Helen with a snowball and make her cry. I'll bet you make a snowman before I come home. You will have to help Holly shovel snow so the green Ford won't get stuck. I know you will be a good baby sitter for mother so give her a big hug and squeeze and kiss for me. Dad

I'm here all alone in this big city. I've been hoping that I had my best girl and old cowhand to see the sights with. As yet no one has chimed in. I'm the early bird. I had a fine trip down. I sat with a fellow from Holland who is working in Brazil and we talked all night. The roads were all clear and there wasn't even snow around the pass. Weather here is like spring or fall. Just that same old weather. Love Bud

Dear Jalaine and Scott

I had a good trip down. I slept until we got well past Reno and started up Donner Pass. It started to snow and the ski area was filled with people and jammed with cars. It was between semesters at Berkeley and we stopped and picked up about twenty young coeds who had spent the weekend skiing. After this the trip was more exciting.

The hotel is very nice. I have a private room with television. I saw Maverick last night. This company really has the procedure and is strict but it is very much on the ball. Future looks good if one will work

Hope Scott saw Bret last night. Love Bud XXOOX

For my eyes only and son Scott

2/7/58 - Hi Doll & Scott

Are you getting ready for my homecoming? They are trying to educate me down here. Actually it's like taking a 25 hour University course. I have to be in class by 8:30 sharp every morning. I have to wear a shirt and tie, no sports shirts allowed. We can't even remove our coats while in class.

While in the Metro Building everything is on the house. The coffee break in the morning is free to all employees. They serve beverages and rolls. The lunch is also free to everyone and the food is real fine. Yes I'm putting on weight and can't stop it. Hope you know me when I get home. If you don't it will be fun getting acquainted again

We get out of class at 4:30. We usually relax till 6:00, eat supper and then study until about 11:00 P.M. and get a 7-Up and then go to bed at 12:00 Midnight. The only relaxing we have is during supper. We have eaten at Moars, Palo's Italian, Cathay Chinese, a $1.09 Steakhouse and at the finest sea food house on the wharf. I just got back from the Sea Food. After dinner we explored a sailing vessel open to the public on the wharf and saw the sights. When the fellows headed for the strip girls I came home to take care of you. (sounds good and is true but you will never believe it). I haven't the itch (scratch) or whatever you call it yet - but I'll sure be happy to get back to your XXXOOO and XOXO.

I sure got a hair cut yesterday have about decided to get a massager one of the electric one. Also a posture couch with a vibrator in it. I'm sure going to be a money man then I can buy anything you and I and Scott wants. Mother wrote me and said they had been out again to look over the house in the day time and had not liked the neighborhood. No one was home so they look in and thought we would have to do a lot of work on the place to make it look nice.

I was happy that you would get out and have a good time while I was gone. I'm glad you are doing just that. Don't go too far however as I would like you to take time out and write me a letter. Two other fellows are from Ogden. One has just been married ten months and his wife is expecting in the next two weeks. His wife is with his folks in Pleasant Grove and they are moving to Ogden as we are moving to Orem. Things could be worse as to moving as you can see from the above. I hope people are not giving you too much trouble when they look thru the house. I've been thinking that you may vamp one of the husbands into changing wifes and taking you back to S.L.C.

Tell Scott the ship I was on was just like the old pirate vessels they used to have battles on. It had an old cannon on it. If you want to drive over to Donner Pass, I'll meet you Friday night and we will have all day Saturday and go home Sunday. The snow conditions aren't as good as Alta but they are ok adn there are some good runs. Squaw Valley is where they are going to hold the 1960 Olympics.

I may fly home but have not checked the schedule. I believe I would be better off on the bus as I believe flying would push me home to late at night or too early in the morning. If I flew 1st class it would cost too much. I will check schedules tomorrow.

Sure miss my gal and big boy. I'll bet Scott is taking good care of you and helping you out like he always does. Love and XXOOX Bud. P.S. Had another picture taken but did not buy extra copies. Will try to get one just for you however.

8/19/60 1:00 AM - Hi Scott & Honey Bun

Just turned off the late show, third night in a row - can't sleep without Honey Bun. Working like a slave - sold one for 10,000 tonight. Haven't had a thing to eat since I left Grandma Robbins.

Was late for church on account of a bridge game Sunday afternoon. Played bridge to 1:00AM Saturday night. Shot a one over par 37 and beat Dick by two stokes Sunday. (First time I've beat him). Played golf Monday with Parlell. Trade all this just to hold your hand and play a game of baseball with Scott. Breakfast for Monday and Tuesday - cornflakes, Lunch - tomatoes. I did eat tonight - HiSpot hamburger and fried squash. Been sleepin' in dreaming of you. Love Bud.

9/18/62 - Darling Wife and crafty Son

Advice to the lonely, keep busy and you will never miss me - won't anyway. What a schedule, every minute of every day is taken care of - this includes evenings and nights too. (taken up with learning and lessons). Ben Casey and I are learning the medical glossary. If I fail at this I'll try Hollywood and get my own show.

I did forget one thing, a swim suit. Bought one at Penney's for a dollar. Took half hour off and went swimming before supper today. Food good, expensive room, very fine - should be at $12.00 per day. This is just as fine as anything at Las Vegas. Swimming pool is extra large size and the water is warm and very enjoyable. Deposit check in bank account at once as I will need it and more before I get out of here or before they will let me go. Yours forever, Bud

9/24/62 - Dear Honey bun and Scott

I'm getting worried for fear that you will not want me to come home and disturb your new wonderful way of life. You and Scott had better start conditioning yourself for the old malignant buzzard who will be home shortly however.

I will fly home on Western (not what you think) because it is the only flight I can get before 10:15 PM. I believe it will be an Electra Jet. I will have supper on the plane so this is you and Scott's last chance to eat out.

I will leave here Friday at 5:00 PM and arrive at Salt Lake at 6:47 PM (they usually land about 20 minutes early). Write the minute you receive this and confirm receiving it. (Send air mail) (two 4 cent stamps and write air mail all over it). Your ever lovin hubby, Bud

Letter 1/7/1965

Hi Jan, Scott & Jalaine

You will never believe this or will you? I arrived one day early. By chance I took out my memo of the sales meeting as I entered the Hotel. There was a line up waiting registration. As I stood there looking at this memo a bell rant - It said late arrival Friday. After reading it over about five times, I was convinced that it was right, I was wrong. So for the night I am down the block at the above hotel at $6.75 a night. Next time you had better take over running my affairs better. Just don't leave anything up to me alone.

This means that I will be coming home on Tuesday. It will be the same flight #64 leaving here 6:15 and arriving there at 8:38 PM Tuesday.

Guess I will have to see the sights tomorrow. Had a real good flight down, even had a good meal on the plane. Due to the late departure, they must have decided to put us on the supper run.

Just before we arrived, a Marine across the aisle had to use that special "give it back dinner" sack as we had some real bouncy weather.

It is about 54 degrees but they do have about a 25 MPH breeze. Visibility is good as I can see all over town. I'm on the seventh floor but I cannot see any stars out.

Maybe tomorrow I will run into a movie star and he will show me around town. Love to all of you, Bud

P.S. Tomorrow night I will be at the Hollywood Roosevelt, 7000 Hollywood Avenue, Hollywood, CA I will probably check in early. Still haven't decided whether or not to let this leak out to the company. You can tell who you like.

Letter 5/7/1974

Jalaine - Perhaps I was getting way out. I think I was coming back in but perhaps I was too far out. Perhaps my lifestyle is completely contrary to what you like. It was a shock to find this out. I have accepted myself and have believed others have done likewise. I've always believed that it takes differences in people and different people to bring about change but perhaps my differences were obnoxious and no good changes were taking place. Perhaps I've gotten lost in my ego as you suggested. It's a good time to reconsider all my values. I would like some good change to take place. First, I would like to be of benefit to you; not a detriment to you. I'd like you to be free to participate in more activities alone and with me and not feel like I'm a burden. I'd like you to feel free to function in the church alone and with me. I do not want to be a source of embarrassment to you.

I believe we need these activities. Perhaps we need new goals in our life. But I need your help. It's been going on so long hat I need new programming. I need someone to interact with and I believe you do too. I believe we can both improve our outlook, our lifestyles, our living experiences. I believe I need understanding and communication. I believe I should give you more understanding and consideration. I believe you are an understanding and considerate partner who has always gone more than halfway. It's too bad it takes a crisis to find these things out but by taking advantage of this situation, I believe we can make it better and rewarding to each of us.

Yes, I'll take heed of your suggestions. As I look back I can see that I've rebelled against them or let them bounce of my armor. I believe you would consider my suggestions if I used more care in presenting them and did not present them as a defense. I believe you are right in assuming that we should compliment each other. We should be "Kissinger's" and work for the common good; then, all benefit - Jan, Scott, your folks, my folks, our friends. I want you to enjoy your folks and relations and friends as my friends. I don't want to lose you and I know you're worth fighting for and changing for. I do want to have your respect and love first - all others come second but I want their respect also. Love Bud. P.S. I love you even more for the telephone call. Have a good week.

College roommate living at the Callahan's

June 12, 1946

I am right in the letter writing business tonight. I decided it was about time to sit myself down and write a few lines to all of you. It seems like ages since we all left the Callahan's and yet it has just been a week. Time certainly isn't passing very fast now, and I guess it's because I'm stuck here in this dead town called Fillmore, but that won't be for long because I'm leaving Friday to go back to Salt Lake. I have finally made up my mind to go up there and work and take piano lessons, and then too I'll be able to see Earl once in a while, and I guess when it comes right down to facts, that's the main reason I'm going up there. Of course my folks don't know that though.
Earl came up to Salt Lake to see me last Saturday night and I went back to Provo with he and his mother Sunday morning. We had dinner at his place and then we went over to see Callahan's, but they weren't home. I guess they had gone over to American Fork to see Mary and Mikie. I felt bad to think I couldn't see them, but my brother called for me Sunday night and we came on to Fillmore.
You know Jalaine, after you had gone Wednesday we were all sitting upstairs, and little Mikie walked through your room saying "Laney all gone", the poor little kid really missed you.
Remember I'm expecting you kids to come to Salt Lake and spend a weekend with me, and I'm also expecting a nice long letter from you, so please don't dissapoint me. must close now, I hvae some more letters to write. My address will be 416 J Street, Salt Lake City. Please don't forget to write will you? Love, Carmella

Dear Jalaine, Say I never did get that long letter you were going to write me but then I guess you're about like me when it comes to letter writing. How do you kids like your new jobs? It sounds fun to me.
I suppose Leora has told you I'm getting married right soon. The date is Dec 4 and we are having a wedding reception the same night in the 1st ward church. I would like very much to have you come and be one of my bridesmaids. In fact Earl just insists that you come when were planning it. You were the first one he mentioned. I want to have Leora for my maid of honor, and you, Renee and Lucile for my bridesmaids. I hope you won't disappoint us. I would like you to wear pastel formals if you have one, and I would like to know as soon as possible what color you are going to wear, so I can order the flowers to match. You can bring anyone you would like to be your partner for the wedding march and dance but please come Jalaine. I must hurry to my class now I almost late. Please write soon and let me know. Love, Carmella.

P.S. I just found out that this date may have to be moved ahead a little because Earl has to be operated on Saturday. I let you know as soon as I find out for sure.

Dear Jalaine Well I guess you're home by now so I'll drop you a card. We were real sorry you weren't able to come in the office and see us but I know how busy you must have been. Dear Jalaine, It seems so long since I heard from you or at least received a letter. I thought I'd write to you and say I hope that we'll do better. This is a sort of sill way to write to anyone but I just do it anyway at least I have some fun. I still have got your pictures that we took when I was there. I'll send them up or bring them home to get them out of my hair. How are you coming with your teaching of that class in Sunday School. I've started teaching one down here. Today I taught the nine year older and really had a time. I'd like to knock their heads together to see if they would rhyme. If there is anything you need to help you in your teaching, just let me know what I can do to keep the kids from screeching. I hope that you are having fun and everything is ok. And that I'll soon be seeing you some day not far away. I guess that this is all I'll write until I hear from you. I think I'd better stop right now before you go coo coo. Love Clarice
p.s. please forgive this letter but I just couldn't resist. Anyway just write soon. Love CH
p.p.s.s. By the way how are you coming with you know how? Is anyone else getting married up there? What's new? Has Shirley heard from Marlin yet? Let me know all. Write soon. CH

Dear Shirley & Jalaine
I'm laying in bed so if my writing is awful and goes up and down so you can't read this blame it on to that will you? If I had known what I know now I would have stayed home another day or two. Yesterday when I woke up my eye was all swelled up so I could hardly see so I stayed home all day. No body socked me in the eye either. If I had any excuse for it I wouldn't care. It's still swelled up today but I think I had better go to work anyway. Course it won't be until about 10 or 10:30 but I'll get there. Rupert and Vernard didn't stay here very long Monday night so I didn't get to talk to them very much as I tried to sleep on the way down. You'll notice I said tried. Every time I'd get just about to sleep Rupert either slammed on the brakes and stopped suddenly or he honked the horn just to wake me up. I told him I'd take care of him when we got to S.L. but they left too soon so I'll beat him up good and proper tomorrow night. He and Vernard are coming up so I'll find out what they thought and so on. Vernard did say Monday night that he wouldn't mind living in Richmond. I don't know if he was serious or not but anyway that's what he said. Well I guess that's enough of that however I don't know what else to talk about! What have you kids been doing since I left? How was the Gold & Green ball? Did you go Jalaine! And did you (missing) Shirley? Did Keith go? Did he take anybody? He won't tell me anything I have to find things out other ways. Have you heard from Marlin? When you write again will you please tell him to write to me? We surely have beautiful weather today it looks like spring. It makes me wan to play ball. I sure would like to. Well I've written on and on and haven't said anything important so I guess I had better close now and write again when I've got something more to say. You be sure and write to me you kids and tell me all the news. Write soon, love Clarice

Dearest Jalaine, Well here we go again only this time I try to do better to keep our correspondence going. Or should I blame you. Anyway I waiting to hear from you. We didn't meet any soldiers Sunday but we went up to Liberty Park and what we didn't see wouldn't even be worth thinking about. Right there in broad day light. Really how far some girls carry things its surely disgusting. We had our fireside class here to our apartment Sunday. It was funny we had just varnished the table Saturday morning and it didn't get dry. One kid put his hand on it and we didn't dare tell him about it so we just watched him. He'd take his hand off wipe it with his handky and then start over. I nearly laughed out loud. I haven't got me a new job yet but I'm not sure just what I want. I also haven't heard from my little man. Mother or Clarice hasn't been to Logan to get the pictures I got taken for him any way they couldn't until after the first but be sure I see it so you can get a good laugh too. Be sure to write and tell me all the gossip in Richmond. Really I was nearly shocked to death to hear about Miss Johnson and those kids but I suppose its going on like that down here only it doesn't seem so bad as I don't know the kids. Well honey I'll close now write real soon pretty please Jalaine cause I do want to hear from. Love Melva

Dear Jalaine; Surprised? Gee, I live in the most interesting part of town. A girl next door was putting her car away this morning about 2 a.m. and some fellow grabbed her. Of course she let out a blood curdling scream. I think I'll come back home before I die of fright. Ha. I went to the dance last night, had quite a bit of fun. Wed. night I had to go to the "Y" to a dance. It was a lot of fun also. I love to dance. When are you coming out to see me? (something) me? What's new, since I left huh? I've not had a letter since I got back and you kids promised to write. You lied --- Are you working yet? Have you heard the new song "Last night I heard you were married and had nine children - tell me (something) is their someone new? I wrote to Gayla Friday she seems to be enjoying herself in Logan. But personally I like L.B. much better. My girlfriend has a date today to go to L.A. to a football game. Fun huh? And then theirs me - I stay home and dream. Oh well such is life. I guess I'll go see the show "Foxes of Harrow", it should be good. I think of you kids often. Wish you were here, we could have fun.
Any scandal around town of any importance? Write and give me all the dope - okay? Enclosed is a poem - maybe you've heard it before.
We see it every morning and it happens every day, a double fill of lovely girls meander on rooms awaits them But they always go in pairs."
Perhaps the trip is long and rough or the stairs are dark and lonely but two by two they always go to the room marked "Ladies Only"
At 2:00 each afternoon the parade begins once more, what goes on in that little room that cannot wait 'til four?
The office manager tears his hair, the buyer is torn with grief. The days production goes to Hell! while the girls are on relief.
The only solution I can find that is fair to every man, is to move the whole dam office into the ladies can.
Well Jalaine ole girl, drop me a line I'll be delighted to hear from you. Bye now, as ever, Gayle p.s. Jalaine let Carol and Dottie and Sara read this too, because their isn't anything to write about.

Dear Jalaine; Thank you for such a nice long letter, although the news wasn't good. If I only had known sooner because my vacation starts this Monday (Sept 20) and I have 3 weeks. It's such a shock to hear of one of our friends passing I still wonder at times if it's true. It's wonderful they were married in the Temple. That at least is one consolation. Her funeral sounded very nice and comforting. Thank you again dear for the details.
We have a beautiful home here in North Long Beach. (I'm living with Mom and Dad). It is a 3 bedroom house and located in a very clean and quiet district. I have to ride a bus to work every morning (the one thing I don't like about it) 7 miles to and 7 miles from. Ah yes, quite a jaunt. I supposed I'll used to it after while. I'm still working at Buffunes (?) as Head Biller; have been contemplating on taking a civil service test, but doubt if I could ever pass the typing test - it's been so long - and you do remember how terrible I used to be at it in school - no comments please. What are you doing now days for a living? The spiritual reader tells me I'm to be married in 1950. Interesting him in? I've had 2 proposals so far - I'm still a hostess at the "Y" and once in a while I meet someone interesting, for instance I've been going with a sailor from Northern California. He's very nice, but not too appealing - know what I mean? We went to L.A. a couple of weeks ago to the museums and up to Griffiths Park to visit the Observatory (astronomy). Very interesting and fun. Ah yes, why don't you come out and see me - it will be good to come back to Utah. I plan on coming to Richmond for a day and visiting with friends and relations so I'll be seeing you within the next two weeks. I want to be in S.L. for conference. Well as you can see I still write like a Mongolian Idiot - please excuse the errors I've made. Guess I better close for now or I'll not have anything to talk about when I see you. Give my regards to all. Bye now, Love Gayle.

Brownwood Sat.
Dear Ruby and girls and Holly too. I got started on that and decided Holly might feel bad if I didn't include him to. Hows every thing in Richmond? Mygosh I feel like I have been away about a year. How I do miss Craige. I had a nice trip out. I guess you knew I came by train. I got here Thursday morning about 4:35. Reed and Phylis was to meet me. Brownwood seems to be quite a place altho I haven't see very much of it yet. The camp is about four miles from here. Reid gets in every night usually about nine o'clock, but Thursday night it was twelve. Then he leaves to go back out at six in the morning so it doesn't seem to me he gets much sleep. He still can't say when he leaves, but I'm afraid I'm not going to get home for a couple of weeks yet. So hopeyou can mother Craige if Flory leaves. I worry so about him. Ihave to stay out at a auto court which is about 12 blocks from Reids at nights. They only have a small apt. I could fix up my back porch if I lived here and get forty dollars a month and the darndest tumbled down looking rooms that some of the other girls who's husbands are here line in, with only a bed and dresser and a couple of chairs, and share a bath with five other couples. Reid included have to pay $8.50 a week. Thats one room and then they buy all their meals out. Boy is it sure hot here however they say the last two days were cool so pity me when its hot again. The first day I was here my face was broken out with heat rash I sure looked good. I sure wouldn't want to live in Texas but they say some parts are beautiful. Ruby if you want to go down and see if there any beans, or cucumbers, well anything help yourself. If you are too busy to drop a line ask Jalaine to write me and tell me every thing Craige's doing. Keep smiling and Richmond goind. Love to you all, Hattie. Make the writing soon and send it to Lt Reid J Hall, 278th Eng. Com Bldg

I'm to go to Portland tomorrow, Lewiston, Idaho, Grangeville, Sandpoint, Couer d'Alene, Spokane Wash and eventually Salt Lake City. Has really been fun. Should be back some time about April 1. After I get back I'm to go to Arizona for a couple a weeks. Fun and more fun. Hope you are all well. Helen

I finally finished that stinking dress. I advise you not to wear it around me because I'm apt to throw up if I ever see it again. Tell Shirley to try it on and see how it fits so I can start hers. That is if I can take another one like that.
Here are two sets of earrings so you cantake your choice. I think the orange ones will look the best because your brown ones won't show up so good with your mop. By the way, you don't have to return the earrings cause they are on the house.
If the dress doesn't fit, alter it yourself.
Better be careful in that bright orange frock and your kinky hair because they'll think you just stepped out of Harlem tee hee. Helen
You might be able to wear both pairs of earings at once on your years.
If the dress fits it's a wonder. The button holes are a little tight and you might have to put a snap at the neck. Suit yourself. You might have to move the buttons over if they pull too much.

Dear Jalaine,
Clair and I want to come down to the Ice Follies and we were wondering if you could get us some tickets for one of the Saturday nights. I don't think it matters which one but if it does, I'll let you know. We ill pay you for them when we get there.
Do you think that you would have enough room for us to stay there Saturday night? If not, I guess we'll have to go out to his uncles place but I don't want to stay to the in-laws place to bad. If you and Bud could go that night maybe you could get tickets by you.
Must close. Let me know if you can get tickets. Helen

Thursday
Dear Jalaine,
If you are going to be home next week we want to come down to the fair. If it is alright we would come down late Wednesday night and go to the fair Thursday. Mother and Dad will come with us. Dad said not to worry about beds because he and mother can always go stay with Aunt Von and I will bring sleeping bags for Brad and Curt. Mother said not to go out alot of groceries because she has 5 dozen eggs and she will bring some of them and will buy bacon. We probably won't leave here until 7:30 or 8 pm so don't expect us too early. I called Shirley to tell her we would probably be to the fair Thursday but she thought she would have to work that day. She said they would go up to the fair Monday when Gary is off. Mother and Dad have gone up to Blackfoot to that fair today.
Ted and Sharon finally got Dean to a specialist in Salt Lake last week. He has hardening of the arteries and nothing can be done for him. He is beyond medication. Who isn't?
I've tried to call you three times today but no one answered. We have direct dialing now. I guess you were out socializing.
Write and tell me if you're not going to be around next week and we won't come down. Helen

Dear Uncle Dean,
Just a note to let you know we each owe Mother (not Dad) $3 for Aunt Arlein. Mother said she gave her a card with a $10 bill in it from us girls. Mother said we only have to pay her $2 and she would put in the rest but I think we should at least pay her $3. I'll write and tell Shirley.
Bob paid $5 and Jeanine paid $10 but Mother said there was no need for us to pay anymore because she has already gave her the $10 and she doesn't want to hand her anymore.
Mother and Aunt Audra asked Aunt Arlein what she was going to do with all the potted plants and she told her they were going to divide them among the three kids and grandchildren. Aunt Audra said that Darlene and Nancy loved flowers and would each like one to remember Uncle Orlando by so she (Aunt Audra) gave a potted plant to Darlene and Nancy. When it come time to give the children and grandchildren their potted plants, they were two short. Cheryl sure was mad at Aunt Audra for her just taking those two plants for her girls.
DeVor had that picture of Uncle Orlando that was on the casket made up for Aunt Arlein, Berdean, Rex and himself. When he went to hand Berdean her picture, she threw her arms in the air and said she didn't want it. She just couldn't stand to have it around to remind her of her dad but yet that women went over to Hyer's corner and hunted around and found Uncle Orlando's pocket knife, belt buckle and part of his false teeth for a keepsake. Personally, I'd rather have the picture. Robert told Dad that he was going to buy a new suit for the funeral but he knew if he did he would never be able to wear it again because it would remind him of sad times. Dad says Berdean and Robert are the two biggest queers he has ever run into.
Do you remember the dark headed girl in the purple dress who sang in the duet - well Norman Swainston really thought she was cute. He said she is the only one he has ever run across that has turned him on. She is a divorcee and is only 34. He said he just might have to come back down this way and look her up. Better close. Dear Jalaine,
We will have our Christmas party on Saturday, Dec 29. Dinner will be at 1 p.m. Would you please bring a salad for everyone. Any kind you would like... I don't think potato salad would go with potatoes and gravy very well but to each his own. Jerry is really excited about Christmas. We have to keep patching up the presents under the tree. He goes back in the corner under the tree and sits for a long time and just looks. He sings Away in a Manger and "Glory to Dog, Glory to Dog, Glory to Dog In the Highest. I hope they can't understand what he is singing in Sunday school. Curt is just as wound up about Christmas but he shows his excitement by being obnoxious. Curtis played in his first Bantam basketball game today and he almost burned the floor up. He looks just like Scott used to - a spider... Talk about a roadrunner.
Plan to stay all night Saturday night if you would like to. The kids can sleep in the cellar. Helen

Dear Jalaine,
Mother says for you to bring a jello salad to the reunion Sunday. You can bring anything else you want like fresh strawberry cream pie with real cream and strawberries or any little goodie like that . . .
We went to Preston to church last night to hear Clair's brother Danny report his mission to England. He is sure a cute boy. Before he came home, he bought quite a lot of English clothing andis it ever stylish. He always did dress real snazzie. Talk about velvets and leathers and high heeled, big buckled, patent leathered shoes. He's not sure whether he wants the girl who has been waiting for him or not. I wish he would tell grandma Kidd that because she keeps having ice cream and cookie parties with both families together. We didn't get home last night till midnight. When you go up there, you keep getting lost in the tupperware and clutter so it's hard to find everyone when you want to go home. Well - so much for that circus...
Doug Johnson is here visiting Aunt Ike for a week. He came to Salt Lake with ArDean's friend to help her drive. This friend is the one that ArDean is trying to match up with Sid Garrett. This friend is coming up here Friday and stay all night and then go back home Saturday. Aunt Ike is going to have Sid up to dinner Friday. Aunt Ike is really working Doug's butt off. I think he will be glad when it's time to go home. He'll have to lay around all summer to recuperate.
Tell Scott I just read in "Rippley's Believe It or Not" that he had cut his hair. I sure am glad. I was afraid that some boy might attack poor Scott some lonely night when he was out walking. His hair looked just like the Clarkson girl's hair.
Better close and go iron so we can get dressed in the morning. Helen
p.s. How do you like my new stationery I bought in Safeway's?

Dear Jalaine,
I have rented the cabins at Bear Lake for August 15 and August 16. Shirley and I are going to be there Wednesday night and Thursday night and we are planning on you and Bud and Mother and Dad staying Thursday August 16. You can come up early Thursday morning because we will already be there and we all check out Friday at noon. This is the way it is reserved in case you haven't understood me so far. Wed, Aug 15 cabin H reserved. Thurs Aug 16 cabin H and J reserved. It will cost you about $12.62 for your half of one cabin for one night. This is the last year we can rent cabins. They said they were selling these cabins this year and moving them out and building condominiums for next year. You don't have to pay your money until you get there but find us first because they are reserved in Clair's name.
Brad is leaving Monday for a boat trip down the Colorado River with boys from our ward. There are 12 boys and 3 leaders going. They will be gone one week. Let me know about Bear Lake. Helen.

Jalaine,
We will probably be down Friday around 11 A.M. or 12 noon. Don't fix lunch. We can go find a Dee's and eat out... We will not stay overnight Friday because Curtis has his Scout Pow Wow the next morning at 9 A.M. in Smithfield. He has to be there to pass his swimming merit badge off or he won't get it until next year. I have to go to the Distribution Center again Friday (unless I an get out of it). Helen

May 19, 1974 Dear Jalaine,
If we are going to Bear Lake this summer, we had better get our reservations in soon. The first week of Clair's vacation is July 14 to 21. We want to go to Manti to the pageant that week. His next week is July 28 to Aug 4. I don't know if he can change for another week or not. When is Bud's vacation?
We are coming to Salt Lake on Tuesday night to a reception for Clair's cousin Danny Kidd. The reception is at the Reception Centre 1227 East 33rd South. I don't think we will get there until 9 P.M. because Clair doesn't get home from work until 6:30. I wish he would change his mind so we wouldn't have to go because we have tickets for the circus in Logan on Wednesday night and Brad's graduation on Thursday night and then Clair leaves at 6 A.M. on Saturday for Summer Camp. He gets home from camp June 8.
We don't go to Lagoon on Father's Day. Our family will hae to plan and go some other day this summer. Mother and Dad have a new colored T.V. Brad and Curt are working for Dick Campbell moving sprinkler pipes. Must close. Helen. We might run Tuesday night after 10 P.M. Will you be up?

Jalaine, We have Bear Lake reserved for Monday July 28, Tuesday the 30th and then we have to be out of the cabins by Noon Wednesday the 31st. I got cabins "H" and "G". They no longer rent "J" which we have always rented. They are still wroking on the condominiums and they are using cabin "J" to store things in. G is right by H so we will have two fronts. G is only a double with two double beds but that will work anyway. There was no other choie. The cabins are now $28 and $24 so it will cost you $12 for your one night - plus tax.
Brad and Curt are through hauling hay for Ken Bair. Now Brad is in the hay for Don Forsgren. He works from 6 A.M. to 4 P.M. then he and Curt move sprinkler pipes for Dick Campbell from 6 to 8 at night. Brad knows for sure he isn't going to be a farmer. Curt left this morning for Scout Camp up Logan Canyon. He will be there 6 days. It is certainly calm and peaceful around here. Pour old Scoutmasters!!! ArDean and Rollo will probably come to Bear Lake too. Helen

I called Dr Larsen and asked him about Dad. He said dad was one of the healthiest patients he has operated on. He can now go on short rides and walking would do him good. The cancer didn't show up anywhere else. He is quite sure he got it all. I went over and opened up the drapes and put his coat on him and drove him around town and we ate at Jeds. That was the first time he has been out of the house since he went with you and Shirley. He doesn't want to go out and walk yet because he might fall. I made out his checks and paid his bills. (and stole $100 he probably thinks). Curt raked his leaves and cleaned his toilet.
Mern Johnson is being operated onin Salt Lake today for cancer of the colon and she also has leukemia. Mont is quite senile and can't stay alone so he is in Cedar City with Curt. I told dad about them and how lucky he was that his problem has been solved. Helen

Jalaine - Here is your $2.00 change from dad's new razor. The old one broke down completely before he got his new one. I went over one day and he was sifting through the dirt out of the vacuum looking for the parts that had come off. When I gave him the new razor I told him to clean it with the small brush that came with it and not to vacuum it every morning because it would suck the parts off the new one. He says he has never done that. What an old poop. He doesn't think he can stand much more of this winter weather. He says he is going crazy sitting in that dreary old house every day and night. I told him he could go down to your house for a few days and that would be a nice change for him. He told me he couldn't leave this kind of weather and then he got up and went home. He is so pleasant and happy when you two are here but other times everything is Dooms Day with him. Enough about him . . .
I am sending you a copy of our ward bulletin so you can see what I put in it about Clair's truck. He doesn't know that I did it. He thinks Margaret Housely did it because she makes up the bulletin. When Bruce Traveller gave the announcements from the pulpit he also extended his sympathy to Brother Kidd on the tragedy in his family. Isn't that funny ...
We bought a Chevy truck that will make it up to Mirrow Lake and back. We still haven't got snow tires yet because we have to buy more rims for the snow tires so -- I can't drive it around here because of our deep snow.
Pam only has to go for blood tests every other week now instead of every week. Things are looking better for her. The blood tests cost $40 each time. Her doctor told her it would go on for 9 or 12 months, but maybe she could go a full month between tests later on. Better close and write a copy of this letter to Shirley. It is now 1:25 A.M. Must go to bed. Helen

Dear Jalaine
Just a note today to thank you for the lovely card.
We had a nice Christmas, Santa was so good to us. Was he good to you? Are you still working Betty Gay told me last week that she was not going to go to school this next quarter. She can't keep her house and school work too. I'm still wondering. I heard yesterday that Mr Callahan was in the hospital and not expected to live. I haven't seen any of the Callahans since he got sick, but I thought I would go over tonight and see them.
Carmell and Earl have to move from their aparment, so now they are living in a tourist camp out in Orem. Her folks have finally come around they are going to help build Earl and Carmella's house.
Well Jalaine, I'm still waiting to hear from you.

Dear Jalaine,
Wednesday morning see's me with a big ironing to do, but I hate to start it so I'll write to you. Gee I was thrilled to get your letter that was next best to having you come in. By the way when will you come down. I sure wish you would take a holliday and come.
I stopped to see you and Renee about 2 weeks ago and no one was home at either place. We were on our way to Wyoming after Fletche's(??) mother. We went up through the Park and had a real nice trip.
Carmella and I went down yesterday so we had a nice long talk. She said she saw Phyllis Anderson and her husband the other day. Phyllis is so big she bets she has to go through the doors side ways. Her husband looks like a little pee-wee boy tagging her around. They are going move into their new house in about 2 months. So I guess Phyllis is happy.
I haven't seen the Callahans for about 3 weeks. I don't know how they are. Last I heard Betty was still in love. Little Mike had his tonsils out. The people have moved out of their apartment. They were sure happy over that.
Carmella is very friendly with us but Earl hardly speaks. In fact for a while Earl wouldn't let Carmella come over. They are still looking for an apartment as they can't get along with Mrs. Williams, I should talk when Mrs. Giles hasn't even been inside my door since we moved over here. She doesn't care much for me. But I don't care.
Flutch bought me a hunting fishing license, so last Sat. and Sunday we went fishing up on Deer Creek dam. I caught a huge fish. Floyd got so excited he screamed like a woman. But it was fun.
I want to go home in about 2 weeks so maybe I'll get to see you.
Did you know Colleen Barnes has a baby boy.
Well Jalaine I better get my work done.
See you soon I hope - write again you dummy. Love Leora

Undated (3 weeks after Leora's marriage)

Dear Jalaine
Now before I start to write the letter I want you to understand I expect an answer.
Floyd and I are still waiting to move into our apt. It just seems we'll never get moved around. The apt is 3 rooms and bath, a very nice place but it's unfurnished so that means we have to buy furniture, at least some. A front room set, frig, stove etc. We're going to use one of Mrs. Giles bedroom sets for a while, it's so hard to buy furniture and it's almost impossible to buy a frig. We have been pretty much alone since we were married until this week. Joe is in Wyoming and Mrs. Giles has been in Vernal, until last Sunday. Then we drove out to Vernal after her. Vernal is about 180 miles from Provo. So it really hasn't been so bad living here. A week ago Sunday Earl, Carmella, Floyd and I went fishing. Gee it was fun, we went down on Utah Lake. Earl has a boat so we really had a big time. I caught 3 fish, then last Wednesday nite Carmella had us over for dinner, she cooked a pretty good meal, then we played cards. Earl and I stood Flutch and Carmella.
Carmella thinks she's going to have a baby. She doesn't know for sure because she hasn't been to a doctor, but she's been having morning sickness all day. What other signs (Effie's class). Flutch took me to see Mary and Mike the other night. And honestly Mike is a grown boy! He can do everything and sweet. He just thrilled me. After Floyd and I get settled in our Apt, we want you to come and stay a few days with us. Then we can all get together. So you plan on coming down.
The Callahans are just the same. They have boys in their rooms and Betty Gay has a boyfriend, she said to me. He is 26 years old, but he doesn't seem that old to me and besides you are Carmella both married old men so I guess it doesn't matter, Mrs Callahan said look what you girls have done to Betty. It tickles me to think he is nearly 8 years older than Betty.
Frank Taylor is just a fat as a little pig. I saw him at a mutual drama the other nite.
Paul Groh. I can't spell his name but you know who I mean. Anyway, he is engaged. I don't know his girl, but it is not the one he went with last year. The little old lady's place has been changed now it opens up into the theater, but they still sell popcorn and stuff.
Phyllis Anderson is going to have a baby. I don't know when, but it can be too long.
Mrs. Giles gave a little party for me and invited the neighborhood and some of the Giles relations. We really had a nice time at it, but what gossips. We have received so many nice gifts from down here and the one you and Renee gave me, it just thrills me. Thanks ever so much.
What are you going to do this summer. Is Renee and Don still as unsettled as ever or have they set their date. I'm going to write to Renee, either this afternoon or tomorrow, depends on how much time I have. Time goes so fast. It's been three weeks today since we were married I've been planning on going home for two of them but I haven't made it yet. Something happens everyday that I can't.
Well Jalaine I can't think of any more news, right at the present time anyway. So I'll close, but you better write to me. And soon. I've been homesick dogonat. Love Leora

Dear Jalaine,
I really shouldn't write to you, until you write to me and tell me that you got home o. But I want to send you the pictures and the Callahan card. you can see Mrs Callahan is still in the Daughters of Pioneers and going strong.
Betty Gay came over and told me her reception was going to be a week from Thursday on the 21st. I just can't believe it. I went to the doctor the Wed after you kids left and he says March. So I've got a long time yet. He said he could tell me if it would be twins in a few months, so all I won't know is if it will be a boy or a girl.
I can't write you the news because there isn't any and you don't write to me. darn you. So I'll close until I hear from you. Come on now break down and write. Love Leora.

Dear Jalaine
I'm sure getting worried about hat letter you promised. I'll bet it got lost on the way. Darn you. Why don't you write. Flutch has gone to the ball game this afternoon so I'm here alone today. With nothing special to do. So I guess I'll go to church in about a half hour.
We have some of our furniture now, a studio couch and chair, they are real nice I think except they are too large for our little room, but they will look good in a larger room. I picked them out. Flutch was the dummy, he paid for it.
Carmella and Earl are coming over to dinner Tuesday nite. I don't know what I'll ever give them to eat; I can worry about that tomorrow. Jalaine when are you coming down to see us please pack your glad rags and come.
You don't have anything to hold you home do you? Please come and stay for a few days. I could meet you at the bus anytime. The best bus to come is the "fast way" to Salt L and then the trailways to Provo. The Fast way goes right to the Trailways station and you can always make good connections. So please come.
Have you heard anything about Renee's plans?
Betty Gay is really in love she says her Bill is just wonderful. Mrs Callahan says he's been to see her every nite since April 2nd.
Everything here is still the same, no news at all.
Well Jalaine I'm (something) you again, please write and come down, then we could get together again. Bye for now. Leora

Dear Jalaine,
Thanks every so much for the Valentine, sure was nice, but I do wish you would have writtena line on it. I just can't seem to be able to get you to write.
I saw the Callahans the other day. Mr Callahan is out of bed now but all he can do is sit around he doesn't ook at all well. Mrs Callahan hasn't changed a bit, Betty is on a diet and really she is loosing weight. She looks good. She is also working at Taylore Reality Co half day. She isn't going to school.
Carmella and Earl are going to start building their house as soon as the weather permits. So Earl says. i sure wish we could get together for a visit there is so much gossip to talk about. I wish you would just take a few days off from whatever your doing and come down. I won't be able to go home until after we get our new arrival.
I really don't expect it to wait much longer, maybe 2 weeks but the Doc says not before the 28th of March. Only thing I feel bad about is that it isn't twins.
We have been busy getting baby clothese its sure a lot of fun. I haven't had to get many for me because I can still wear some of my old clothes. My fat has come on my hips and acrossed by back. Yes and in front. Still it hasn't been too bad because they things I wore when we went to the "Y" are still fitting me.
Edris has a new baby girl. I was sure thrilled she got a girl.
I hear quite a few of the girls up that way are expecting, is that right.
I got me a new electric sewing machine so I've had a good time sewing. I'm going to sew today.
What are you doing now? Please write Jalaine and tell me the news.

Dear Jalaine,
How goes everything with the working girl? This old married bag is getting along thats about all.
Carmella said you were coming down, so I'm still waiting, that's been about 4 weeks now.
Jalaine couldn't you come down for a week end, or a few days of your vacation. So we could get together for a little gab session.
Just think next June is our meeting month, it will soon be here. When we planned it, it sounded so far away. Nadean is here staying with me. She has been helping me with Terry Lee and my painting. We have made us an apartment in part of Floyd's mothers house, so we have had a of work to do. And we still have plenty more.
Terry has changed a lot in the past months you wouldn't know her. We think she's pretty smart. Proud! huh! Betty Gay and Bill have a sweet little red head they are another proud couple. You'll just have to come and see our cute babies.
Floyd and I are planning for another addition to our family in Jan. and Jalaine I'm still hoping its twins. What are you doing now? How do you like your work etc? Oh Jalaine you've just got to come down for a gab session. Drop me a card and say you'll be down. Floyd & Nadean have gone to a ball game so I'm home alone tonight, trying to make the time rush past.
Well Jalaine I'm not going to give up so you better come down soon.

Dear Jalaine
Why don't you ever write. I was in Salt Lake twice lately but I didn't know your address so I didn't get to see you. I walked in the First Security Bank and looked around but I didn't see you.
Do you have Sat. afternoon off and Sunday? If so why don't you come down a spend the weekend. We are always home.
Carmella and Earl have moved in their new house, they seem to be quite happy.
Betty Gay is getting nice and round but she sure seems happy about it all. She has been quite sick, but is feeling pretty good now. I think the day is around April 7th.
Terry Lee is walking a little and gets into everything. She really keeps me busy.
What are you doing? Do you like your work? Write and tell me all about it.
Thanks so much Jalaine for the lovely hankie and card. I hope I'll be seeing you one of these first weekends.
Love Leora and Terry Lee

Draft letter from Jalaine to Leora - undated

Dear Leora,
It certainly seemed good to hear from you. I received a letter from Renee the same day, almost too much excitement for me in one day. Renee sounded so discouraged with everything. If the poor darn kid would make up her mind one way or the other about marrying Don I know she would be much happier.
How are you and Floyd coming along? Gee I am certainly glad you two are going to have another baby (and for your sake I do hope it will be twins). I hope you are not as sick this time as you were the last time. There is certainly alot of kids down at the bank going to have babies in fact they call the proof department 'fertile valley'! (It keeps me broke all the time buying shower gifts).
I get my vacation starting the afternoon of the 27th until the 12th of Sept. I just thought if you weren't too busy this would be a good time to come down for a weekend and get acquainted with Terry Lee and get caught up on a little of the Provo gossip but if your in the midst of moving (and having a baby) why don't I wait until you feel more like having company? I could come down some weekend later on.
I just had my hair cut again (I look just like a shaved rabbit). I am getting uglier and fatter with age, but in spite of it all this has been a very happy year. I love my job and the people I work with.
Well I have better be closing. I surely would like to hear from you.
Tell Floyd and Terry Lee hello. Goodbye for now.
Always Jalaine
I would love to hear from you so please be sure and write

Dear Bud & Judy, I guess we owe you a letter so I thought I would get on the ball and write. I am going to get your shirt mailed to you either today or tomorrow. I couldn't get white but this color should go with black. It is really warm out today. This country sure has the most ideal weather. It is still a little to cool to go swimming but I am sure looking forward to going in the ocean. We have been a couple of times but we almost froze to death.
You probably wouldn't know Carolyn she has grown so much. She is quite the little lady now. The more I stay here the better I like it. We sit out in the sun in the afternoons. I hope I can have a good sun tan by the time we come home. We are planning on spending a lot of time on the beach this summer. We (Carolyn and I) also have gab sessions on the porch with the gals that live around here. It is sunny on our side in the morning and across the way in the afternoons. I get my work done in the morning and if there isn't any ironing or baking to do I sit out in the afternoons. We don't go out much. We either stay home and watch television or this couple comes over and we play cards. Last night there were six of us and we had a lot of fun.
Jalaine, would ou send me the recipe for whipped Jello. You have told me enough times but I don't remember just what you put in it. I have more time now to do a little cooking and baking.
I hope I can learn to sew before long. I made me a skirt and blouse while we were in Missouri.
Well write soon, Love Renee and Andy

They are having two U.S.O. dances here this weekend. I guess I will go with Marion. One is at Half-moon Bay and the other one is here at San Carlos, it is formal.
Well, they are waiting for me to go to town so I will have to close now. I will write more when I have time. You write to me and tell what is happening in Richmond. Write Soon. Love Renee

I haven't got anything to do so I thought I would just write you a line even if I never do get a letter from you. I got a letter from Leora today. She wants us to come down. Sunday you said you might go down on your vacation. If you do, do you care if I go with you.
Do you think I could geta job in Salt Lake. If you think I could, I would like to come down and get one. If you don't make any plans before your vacation, I may go back with you. But I am not sure so don't waitif you have a chance to do anything else. I have just been thinking about it, I have got to do something and I am having a rugged time trying to decide. I forgot to tell you Leora is expecting again in January.
Why don't you write to me.

Dear Jalaine,
Well how about that letter you were going to write me?
I am selling tickets. I am bored. There are 62 people to the show. The show is Key Largo. Ruby is to the show. I don't know if Harold is running it or not. Shirley is here to. I can't remember if Helen came or not. Now you know all the news. I haven't been doing anything much. I have seven balls in my (missing). Yarn that color.
Lael and Roma have a baby boy. I saw Dallines baby yesterday it is really cute. It looks a lot like her only that it is dark.
What have you been doing? How is Elmer? Has he ask you for a date yet? Shirley came home and said she didn't dare look at him when she was down. Sounds like you had fun that weekend she and Ardeen were there.
If I came down some Friday. Could you go to Provo Saturday afternoon and Sunday? It would be fun and if you can, I think I can come down in 3 or 4 weeks. Write and tell me when would be the best time for you. And which bus to take so you can meet me. I would rather come on the greyhound so I wouldn't have to change in Ogden.
There isn't anything new in town to tell you about. Of course you know that nothing much ever happens up here. Mr. Pogge had a grown son and his wife up here last week and talk about rugged looking and dating characters boy they'd scare you to death.
Well I can't think of anything more to say only please write me a letter. Love Renee. Write soon
Monday, Night
Didn't have the letter mailed so thought I'd open it and tell you the news. Don and I had a wreck yesterday afternoon. Three cars were involved we were in the middle car. No one was hurt. I have a stiff neck and I scratched my knee a little, but Don's poor car is in the garage and might not be out for a month. It wasn't Don's fault. The other to guys were issued tickets but they drove their cars away all right. It won't cost him anything to fix it, he had insurance. Tell you more when I see you. Bye now Renee

Dear Jalaine,
Say how about that letter you were going to write me as soon as you got back. I finally decided that I would have to write to you first and then maybe you would write to me. Please do...
How are you coming? Do you still like your job? How is your boss the one that is not married of course. Write and tell me all about what you are doing. Mothing much has happened up here. Ruth Smith had her baby.
Ruth Galbraith is getting married on either the 3rd or the 10th of December. They are going to California to live. They are not getting married in the Temple.
I am selling tickets tonight and I am having a hard time getting them wrote. We had a show Wednesday and Thursday this week and I am really tired of selling tickets.

Hello Jalaine
Well it's Christmas Night in the States, it was Christmas here yesterday. We had our Christmas dinner today though. It was a lucious dinner. We had turkey and all the things that goes toward making a good Christmas dinner. It is sure better than the chow we have been getting. I really ate. You might say we made a pig of ourselves. Well I'm on Bougainville, Soloman Islands. We've been in combat. It's a bit rugged at times but I'm well and not doing so badly now. We're not doing much now. We play lots of Phinockle and gin Rummy. That's about the extent of our recreation. We live by a nice little river so we can bathe and wash clothes quite easily. I was down to the beach this morning. I went in swimming and also got me some nice sea shells. I saw a woman for the first time in almost 6 months. She wasn't beautiful but she looked o.k. after not seeing one for so long. I guess you are going to school at North Cache. How are you doing in school by the way. Do you go to many Dances. I guess you go to all the shows. Who is your boyfriend by now. I'm writing this letter by flashlight and it's not to bright at that.
Well what did old Santa bring you. I guess he was good to you. It surely doesn't seem like Christmas out here. It's quite hot and it rains almost every day. It's all jungle around here and there are some jungle swamps. They are really bad. Well I'll wish you a happy New Year and hope you had a Merry Christmas. Thanks for the letter. I surely enjoyed hearing from you. A guy really looks forward to mail call out here. Well tell Shirley and Helen hello for me. I'll close for tonight.

Dear Uncle Harold & family
I thought the least I could do was to write and thank you for letting me bother you for the few days I was in Richmond. Thank you also for allowing me to eat all your food.
Jalaine and I enjoyed ourselves in Salt Lake City. Maybe I shouldn't speak for both of us, but I liked those days she was there. The offer still goes about her cooking my meals any day in case she can't get a job in Salt Lake or somewhere else near Richmond.
Thanking you again for all the trouble I caused, I remain,
As ever Roszeen
P.S. Come and see me sometime. It seems rather good to be back.

Dear Jalaine:
I have been trying to get around to writing to various people and thank them for being so nice to me on my vacation. First of al please tell your mother and father thanks for putting up with me while I was at your place. Two years in a row to bother your folks is quite a bit. It seems I have been quite busy since I've been back or I would have written sooner. Thanks for coming down to Salt Lake for the few days, you did when I left that Sunday the main thing I was thinking about was my suitcase and Daddy not being there so I was very sorry I didn't thank you then like I should have. I hope Shirley and Ardene had fun in Salt Lake. Daddy checked my bag to go to San Francisco instead of Oakland (Veressa probably checked it and thought I was getting off there instead of Oakland) but I got it in Oakland without much trouble.
Bonnie is here right now putting up her hair. Dickie went to a meeting, and comes and picks her up.
Robert met me at the Airport. I had dinner at his house that Monday. It seems rather good to be back.
Jalaine, why don't you come out here for a visit? Don't wait til next summer.
Enclosed is a copy of my Patriarchal Blessing. Send me a copy of yours. How is your job? Did Renee and her boyfriend have a nice time on his birthday?
Don't mind the pencil writing but my pen isn't working right.
Answer this letter and I'll write you a better one than this, (somthing). It's 10:00 and I'm sleeping, so I will close,
As ever, Roszeen

A Patriarchal Blessing given up the head of Roszeen Albiston
Father's name: Ray Leland Albiston
Mother's name: Lovisa Caroline Thompson
Born: Richmond, Utah. May 16, 1928
I lay my hands upon they head in the name of Jesus Christ and give unto thee a Patriarchal Blessing which I humbly pray the Lord to direct for they comfort and welfare. Thou art of Ephraim and therefore rightfully entitled to all the gifts and blessings of the New and Everlasting Covenant which the Lord made with Abraham and his decendants forever. This is thy diving birthright; this covenant means that the Lord promises to bring you about thy exaltation to perfection as a queen of heaven if thou art true and faithful on thy part in keeping the covenant. Rejoice therefore because thou art among the chosen people of God. Let thy heart sing the songs of Zion as you meditate upon the grandeur of the plan of life and salvation.
The Lord has seen thy lie thus far and has heard and answered many times thy humble prayers and He has blessed thee and comforted thee. This is atestimony to thee deep within thy own soul Therefore let thy faith be increased; go forward with confidence, peace, and seek for more understanding. The Lord will lead thee to overcome all thy obstacles and rise above all thy difficulties and to prevail over all thy enemies. Thy testimony shall be a bright and shining light, therefore fear not; doubt not; teach the gospel as far as possible and the Lord will make friends for thee through thy faith and good works. Thou art to be a mother in Israel and to teach the young and to bear thy testimony among the saints. Be kind and charitable; patient and forgiving. Feast upon the bread of life in the Holy Scriptures and read this blessing occasionally. I bless thee for thy health and strength; with peace and prosperity and I rebuke all evil influences for thy sake, in the name of the Lord.
These blessing I seal upon they head according to thy faithfulness and diligence and I seal thee up to come forth in the morning of the first resurrection with the sanctified where dwells the Savior. Amen.

Dear Jalaine:
I receivd your very nice letter and blessing a few days ago and was very glad to get them. I had begun to think you weren't going to answer my letter but hoped you would.
Your blessing was extremely good I thought; it goes into detail so much more than mine and it is written in a simpler manner. It looks as though some day you will have a rather large family; you would make a good mother, so I hope you will. It is longer than any I have read. It must have been tiresome to write in longhand and send to me but I'm glad you did. How is your father, mother, sisters and the rest of my relatives? How has Grandpa Albiston been?
Right now I am waiting for Robert to come over, but he is late. Last week we went to Carmel to see a wedding of one of Robert's boyfriends; Robert was best man. One girlfriend of mine got married while I was on my vacation. She is the one that was in Salt Lkae with me one summer. She is a Mormon. Another ran off to Reno Saturday, and I went to a shower for her last night. There have been more weddings; I'm about the only one left.
Oct 3, 1948
This is about two weeks later as you can see. I'm determined to finish it though. Bonnie and Dickie are fine. There were over for dinner yesterday. We see each other quite often.
What are you doing now? Do you still work at the store and show?
Right now I am cooking my lunch, and we are going out to dinner tonight. When you cook for youreslf, you enjoy eating out all the more. Robert usually takes me to dinner on Sunday which I enjoy more than most anything. You should come out here to visit me and I would let you do the cooking for me. Things always taste better when someone else does the cooking. I'm still kicking so I guess things could be worse.
A girl at work got married recently after knowing her husband only a month before they married so we have had a little excitement. Elanor a girl at work and I have been going with the same boy for a long time and Lorene, the girl I mentioned, wasn't even interested in boys we thought. I guess we are just slow; we both agree that a longer courtship is better don't you? I don't see how she could be sure you liked him inthat short of time. She seems pretty happy regardless. I guess we are old fashioned, how about you?
Oct 4, 1948
Have you been to Salt Lake since I was there? Your folks go there quite often to visit Von & Lloyd don't they? During the winter it is pretty dangerous to drive to Salt Lake when you have to go over those hills near Brigham isn't it? I don't know much about snow however; its been so long since I lived where it snows. Last year we went near Tahoe to ski (it was the first time for me, and believe me I'm no champ) and I was anxious to get home to get warm. So you ski? I guess youdo. Are you going to vote this year? I'm not old enough but I might have have ever voted probably even if I were able. Bonnie didn't register; I don't think she has ever anyway. I don't sound very patriotic do I? I don't particularly care too much for Dewey or Truman anyway. Roosevelt had been president from the time I can remember anyway. This is very boring I know, but it helps to make this letter longer.
Has the girl that would never work for you when we wanted her to gotten married yet?
Has anything exciting happened in Richmond lately? Any new gossip? How are my aunts? We don't write much. Mlle Newbold in San Diego is the best of them all at writing, so if there is any news you keep me informed. Excuse any mistakes you might find in this letter because I always write letters just once regardless of the condition they turn out to be in. I make use of my eraser as you can see.
Robert's grandmother and grandfather came back from their vacation about a month ago and they gave me a pin, linen tablecloth and a scarf. They had been gone for two months and went to Canada and came back by way of New York, Chicago and Boston etc. They are awfully nice. His grandfather goes to Vancouver every year to play Bowling on the Green, a scottish game. He is over 80 and that's pretty good to do that at that age. He has many cups he has won.
I hope I haven't bored you too much, but you said to write you a ong letter. If the contents isn't interesting at all just remember that there isn't much to talk about for you don't know anyone here but most of my relatives live in Richmond.
As ever, Roszeen

Naked Neptune Lem!
Ah'm lonesome! Not only do I miss you'n Ma, but how oh how I pine for the roar of a husker, the feel of slimey muddy corn, and the odor of the west pile - mad, impetuous youth that I am.
I am horribly disappointed in college - hate it, hate it! Marilyn has been very nice and helpful, but I dream about that damnable Sig Derby it promises to be even worse than I anticipated before.
Have you obtained a source of salary as yet? I am to start part time at the Library tomorrow, zounds a good deal different from my past experience at ye olde cannery.
I have volumes to tell you, get in touch with Ma Allen and set a date to meet me. Write and lighten my life brother mine. Give my regards to your family. R. E. B. "Clem"

Dear Lem, That was the nicest surprise! How on earth did you know it was my Birthday? Excuse pencil and loose leaf but this is the first chance I've had to drop you a thank you, and I thought you wouldn't mind.
I just finished my last exam, which means, as far as I'm concerned, that summer session is over, finished, done! As soon as class is dismissed, I'm going to hie me to the village to raise some merrie hell (coke and aspirin at the 'Bird' that is).
The Prof has ben disecting a frog on the table below us and at the moment, I'm sitting amid a pale galaxy of sea-sick prudes. If there's anything I hate it's a girl who acts like one!
Have you heard anything from Ma? Gee I miss you both! Sure wish you would come live with me at the Dormitory and go to school - and just why can't you anyway?_____?
What's this? I thought any day now I'm going to see Lem smiling at me from the Society page of the Harold with a caption reading Mrs. Jay Van Noy - and you're not even engaged? get busy girl! and incidentally, you know better than to ask such a question of me. Next time I see you I'm gonna (xxx xxx) on the horn.
In just about two minutes comes freedom. I don't want to be trampled.
Regards and thanks again. Brother Hank

Dear Jalaine, I was very glad to get your most informing letter. You don't know what it means to get a letter from home. I just got back from chow and am laying on my bunk thinking of home reading over and over my letters. I have written about 30 letters now and have received 5, four of them from dad. ou should see me in my sailor uniform. Better still you should see me wash it. What a hell of a job. I went to church Sunday and was it a flop of all the serious religions. You may not realize it now but your 3rd hour class will be remembered all your life. I would like to take one more year of seminary and not play around so much. Well lights out in 5 minutes so have been hurrying hope you can unscramble this writ.

Dear Jalaine, I have been moved again. This time to a field about 10 miles from town of Corpus Christi. There are three big hangers here and about 1000 airplains. There is a gym, show house, ship service, swimming pool and everything here. It is just like a miniature city. There is a buss stop here to go to town and I make that trip about every 4 days. I'll bet the kids like the idea of working instead of going to school. That would be fun. Is school going to be dull this year. Can you have night dances and do you get out of any classes for assemblies. How long will it be before it snows. I don't expect to see any snow this year. Nor any mountains there isn't a mountain in the state of Texas.
Have you noticed I am trying out a new style of writing trying to follow your pattern. Tell the folks hello and tease Ardeen for me. I wish I could have you wash my white uniform but I guess you couldn't do it good enough to suit me. Remind me when I get home to show you how to wash and iron my rolling. Well will close, I am waiting for answer. Seth

Dear Judy,
We want to wish you a Happy Birthday and hope you have a very happy day and happingess thru the year. We have sure had a beautiful summer so far up here. We just about live in the lake it is so pretty up here. Yesterday Steve was cutting the lawn and he came in and said come and see the deer. Out near our dock on the beach there stood a deer it was a yearling he was just starting to get his anters. The deer was shaking our neighbor thought some dog had scared it but soon it was ok. Then in the afternoon it left no one saw it go but we never know what next. It seems like there is always something happening. We sure love our place up here. It is a big place to keep up but we have so much place and ground. Why don't you and Bud, Scott and Jan and Mom and Dad come up and see us after Renee leaves. How about Bud working so far and then coming up or just come up. Scott and Jan would really have a good time. I hear Jan is quite the swimmer. She would sure have a good time with Ann. We have got plenty of room. We are going to get our cottage cleaned up this week the kids like to sleep out there. We would love to have you come, there is so much to do right here on our place.
We just wanting to wish you a nice day. Tell everyone hello from us. Love Sharon and all

Dear Bud Judy and Family
It seems summer is here and it is beautiful. We went over to Mason Lake this last weekend and took off Sunday and Monday and really had a vacation. This friends of ours just bought a new boat and the kids sure got in a lot of water skiing and it was alot of fun. We were wondering if your family could come up and see us over the 4th of July. Did you have any plans. How about bringing Mom and Dad and we could have a real nice time. It is so beautiful up here with the lakes and trees you are in another world. The drive we took to go to Mason Lake it was just like driving thru Yellowstone Park. The boys had really been playing tennis and want to take Bud and Scott on even Phil has been playing alot. If you can't come the 4th or any weekend is fine. Bud you have got to bring Judy and Jan up how about it? We have got to show them the beautiful city. Let us know your plans. I don't know if we will be down this summer or not; maybe winter will have to see how Phils work goes.

I'm wondering did you get the birthday card? You know I put my address up in one corner for one reason, and you know why. I've been wondering and wondering have you quit work yet?? Do you kinda miss calling 6-3375 every day and complaining about your latest developments and condition.
I guess Helen is down staying with you know, put her to work good and you just take it easy. Boy when I come home I'll be able to cook more than just Spaggetti and meat balls for your supper, I know lots of tricks now.
So the Baby will be coming through in Nov. Will like I told my lady friend here I'll hit home just about in time to play nurse maid for you. I'll leave here about 27th of Oct. So be sure and hang on until I get there.
Well the heat has hit this Caroline State again; and darn its hot. So darn hot it makes you think your going to die, and I'm not just a kiddin;
I'm Sunday School teacher now for the wee ones of the branch, there's one family here about like the Carlson's; its a good thing too or I wouldn't have any kids to teach.
Mother gives me the word about you flying out to Calif get that flying, your really getting hot stuff, now be careful Jalaine and don't be running around too much cause you've gota have this baby and have it right. Got the name all picked out; it's ok if you want to name it Shirley cause I'm not going to use that name but by darn don't name it Susan cause I am that one.
Hows Aunt Von and all the S.L.C. relatives? Went to apply for a job last Thursday and they said no women jobs open. I sure was glad. But anyway they're going to try and get that un-employment wages for me; hope they can cause we don't have any too much money to live on.
Got your fruit bottled yet. Jalaine; you know next winter you'll have 3 mouths to feed.
Well guess I'd better close. Write to me sweetheart and be careful. Sure do miss ya. Love always, Shirl - get all that love stuff.

Labor Day
Dear Jalaine;
Here's the letter I told you I wouldn't write, but reckon I'd better.
I went to the Dr. today and ask him all questions you wanted to know. He said going to Mirror Lake could not have turned that baby around or any activity on your part. He says its something that just happens, that they know nothing about. I ask him if the baby could be so active that it pulls it loose and he said no, that they don't know why but sometimes the after birth tears loose and they down know why or how. It just does - he said the Mirror Lake trip did nothing to you only probably make you tired a few days or your moping the floor did nothing he said when mothers loose a baby such as that they have a tendency to look for things that they have done that might of caused it, but he said is nothing on their part, just something that happens that you have no control of. So I say that babys spirit just wasn't ready to come on this earth.
I wish I were up home with you, I'd put you busy making drapes. You left Scott's popcicles in the ref.
The Dr. said mine and Sues blood is tip top now, no more iron pills for either of us. Gonna close. Come down.

Dear Jalaine,
I'm slow but I just wanted to thank youfor your letter. I was having kind of a home sick day. I'm getting used to living here. I do love the quiet peace here. People are starting to get to know us. The kids are adjusting well. They all say they wouldn't like to go back to Orem. Jay D once in a while would though. I miss people and family in Orem but I am meeting very nice people here. We've sold our home and put the money in the bank up here. We are now looking at land and homes. Sure is a headache. Homes seem to run higher here. This is also not alot to choose from. I'm sure we will find one. Alan &nya came over yesterday and ate dinner with us. Alan got layed off. Sure hope he finds a job soon. There insurance will still cover the baby when it is born Thank goodness.
Dusty's had an earache so I took him to the doctor in town. He's on medicine now and hopefully he will do better. The doctor is Frank Newhouse - maybe Bud knows him. He sure is young so far I think he is an all right doctor. Come see us sometime if your ever in the area. I'd love to visit with you. Your always welcome. Better close. Thanks again for the letter it cheered me up alot. Love Sue

Dear Jalaine, Scott and Jan
Of course you knew I would write a poem, because that is how I best relay my feelings. I am sorry for your loss. You were all so good to Bud. I knew Bud for my whole life and that is 59 years. Wow where did time go. I miss the old days. I have been thinking of Richmond memories of late. I can picture Grandma Ruby sitting on the porch in her rocker. I picture Holly reading the paper. I picture the chestnut trees. I picture the dog named Chip with one blue and one eye brown. He was such a hairy dog. I picture all of us cousins sitting on the lawn and eating clover club potato chips. I used to love clover club potato chips they always remind me of Richmond. I remember the cookie jar and eating Sugar cookies and they were bought from the store. I remember sweetie pies and moon pies. I remember Holly making wheat mush. I remember grandma Ruby having Jergens Lotion, I think that is why I buy it now, and I always loved the smell. I remember doing dishes in some kind of plastic tub and the green Palmolive dish soap; I buy that kind now because it reminds me of Grandma Ruby and Holly. I even remember that grandma always put such hot water in for me to wash the dishes and I would put in a lot of soap. I remember combing Holly's hair, he would sit on the floor and I would comb it. I remember the show house and the candy store and the walks around town. I remember ice cream and Hershey Syrup. I remember Coke and cheese. I remember the smell of Richmond and the cold mornings that were fresh and clean. The air was crisp and clear. Since I have been Chile I have been thinking of Grandma and Holly a lot and I even have had a couple of dreams about them, maybe they are my guarding angels while I am here in Chile and I can tell you I truly need guarding angels.
When someone dies it seems memories flood the mind about the times you spent with that person. That is what happened when I thought about Bud.
Thank you for all the support you have all given to me and my family through the years. You have all been a big part of my life and I have been blessed by your love and concern. I lover you, Jan, Scott and Jalaine. May God comfort all of you.
Love Sue Larsen Porter

1945-1946

Notes from Jalaine's daughter: Valdo was an Italian POW and incarcerated in Ogden. It appears that when Jalaine was at BYU in 1945-1946, she and an unnamed friend met Valdo - most likely at some Ogden function. Valdo corresponded even after he returned to Italy. While trying to find out more about Italian POWs in Utah, I contacted Kathy Kirkpatrick at www.gentracer.com. She confirmed Valdo Cioni was a sotto tenente (2nd Lt.), page 149 of the POW rosters C-D on 31 March 1945. Her reply explains more.

The return address from Ogden is the 77th Italian Service Unit Quarter Master Company. The Italian Service Units were co-belligerents, siding with the Allies after the fall of Mussolini. As such, they had extra privileges like dances at St. Joseph's in Ogden, picnics and weekends with a sponsoring family from the Italian-American community in Utah. With that kind of job, it's unlikely that he worked outside of the Depot at Ogden. However, folks took the trains and gathered from all along the Wasatch Front to party with these men and speak a little Italian. Perhaps she accompanied a girlfriend of Italian heritage to one of these events and made a friend. While some of these meetings resulted in marriage (five in the Ogden area), most were just good fun.

Dear Jalaine, By chance I met you and I was pleasured for that. I don't know you because I've seen you only one time, bu I think you are a nice girl. I was sorry for what happened, but I had to do that. I am a man and not a toy to play with as somebody thought. To joke with people especially with stranger people it's dangerous. I was honest and sincere in my feelings toward your girl friend. She answered with lies, her habit was lies and she got what she wanted. I have written to her and explained to her clearly and plainly the reasons of the breaking. She is faulty for that as I'm faulty for my honesty and cincerity but nothing to worry about we have to learn from life. This great teacher what we couldn't from school. I am leaving your country about the half of this month and I will go again home after three long years and I'm very glad for that. If some time after married it will happen to you to visit Italy, my home, or better my father's home is always opened for friends. Best luck to you and best wishes for school and success in life. My best regards a friend, Valdo Cioni

Dear Jalaine
It's a long time I have failed with my dreams and awaking up I did find that I was still in Ogden and maybe for a long time to come indeed to be home. It's so a long time that I'm far from home that when I get back I doubt to find again at first the street to get my home; in fact that's the fourth Christmas I'm far away; but what can I do? Nothing at all just to get mad but if I do it's just bad for my health so I'll try to be happy and get along with the hope to leave in a near future. So the only thing I worry about is that I want to see again that personal enemy of mine that's the dentist and certainly not for the Season's greetigs but because I've to pull off a tooth and this time is the last one. Accept Jalaine, my best and sincere wishes of a Merry Christmas and that the New Year may bring to you all the happiest. Sincerely Valdo Cioni

Wellington Webb

Notes from Jalaine's daughter: Jalaine never mentioned Wellington Webb by name, but she did say that she dated a man before Bud. The one thing she said was this man made her cry a lot. After looking at notes written by Mrs. Williams (Jalaine's landlady), it appears there was some overlap and both might have dated Mom at the same time. Jalaine met Bud in July and they were married in November so probably not a lot of overlap. Ironically, Wellington Webb married another woman from Richmond that grew up with Mom.
